Death Metal is one of the many diverse genres of Heavy Metal.

Death Metal evolved from 1980's Thrash Metal and by incorporating some of the extreme elements of Black Metal, a brand new genre of Heavy Metal was born!

Death Metal combines the fast tempos of Thrash with the characteristic blast beats of Black Metal resulting in a more "brutal" sound than Thrash or Black. Death Metal is typically intense and fast, usually utilizing a double bass drum and dual distorted guitars.

The aggressive vocals of Thrash developed into the "cookie monster" vocals of Death Metal. The lyrical content of Death Metal is almost always dark and/or apocalyptic although some bands such as Napalm Death introduce political and social issues into their music.

Death Metal itself can be categorised into several sub-genres, including Blackened, Deathcore, Brutal, Goregrind, Progressive and Melodic.

Read on for a more detailed look at Death Metal, including videos from classic and contemporary Death Metal bands.
