Robert Browning, an English poet, was born in 1812.
He became well-known as a writer in mid life when he
published the two-volume, Men and Women. His greatest
contribution was The Ring and the Book, a dramatic monologue,
published in l869. The Pied Piper of Hamelin is one of his
famous writings.
Published in 1985, Jilly Cooper's Riders is the first I read by this author and remains my favourite. I found Riders one summer in a charity shop and read it non stop until I had finished, I was hooked! Jilly Cooper's Riders is a fantastic read, with plenty of drama, romance and sheer frivolous froth. Jilly Cooper preceded chick lit fiction, and probably invented it! Read on for my review of this classic 80's bonkbusting blockbuster novel!

I first read Bonjour Tristesse when I was 15 and being an angst teenager was attracted to the title, which translates as "hello sadness". I immediately fell in love with the book and the 17 year old narrator Cécile in the first sentence. Being a similar age, her cynicism 'spoke' to my hormonal 15 year old self. I am a sucker for glamour too, especially French elegance and style and Bonjour Tristesse has this in spades.
